What is this Duo (Two-Factor) Authentication?

What is DUO (two-step) authentication?
Two-step authentication provides a second layer of security, requiring a physical device to log in, in addition to your password. By requiring an additional channel of authentication, we can protect user logins from remote attacks that may exploit stolen usernames & passwords.

How It Works

  1. Access a link that requires two-factor authentication.
  1. Use your phone to verify your identity.
  1. You're now securely logged in.

Getting Started with Enrollment

Enroll Your Device (Smart phone)

1. Access a system that is protected with DUO and click Start Setup.

2. Select Mobile Phone and click Continue.

3. Enter your phone number for the mobile device you will have with you when authenticating into your account, and choose Continue.

Important: Only enter your cell number. Landlines, including NCCU Office phones are not supported.

4. Select the type of device you have and click Continue.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to download the Duo Mobile App on your device. You can also access DUO App download with the links below. Once the app is downloaded, select I have Duo Mobile.

6. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your NCCU account to the Duo Mobile App, and then select Continue.

7. Once added, the QR Code on your system screen will have a green check mark and the NCCU account will add to your DUO Mobile app. You’re ready to use DUO!

Enrolling a Non-Smart Cell Phone

  1. In the Duo Control Panel, click Start setup.
  2. Select Mobile phone, and click Continue.
  3. Enter your cell phone number. Verify that it's correct, and click Continue.
  4. Select Other (and cell phones), and click Continue.

When you select Text Me, a text message is sent to your phone. This text message will provide you with 10 codes/tokens for 10 seperate entries. Enter 1 of the corresponding 6 digit passcode/token to proceed. Voila! you are securely logged in.

Authentication Options

Push Notification

Once the DUO mobile app is installed, you can select to receive a DUO push notification on your smart-phone. Open the notification, and you’ll see a green checkmark and a red X. Simply tap the green checkmark to gain access.

Passcodes

You can use the DUO mobile app to generate passcodes. At the bottom of the  DUO prompt click on the link that says text me new codes, to receive a new set of codes once you have used up the previous codes from the time of first use.

Helpful Tips

What is “Remember me for 30 days”?

Users are offered this “Remember me for 30 days” option during login. When users check the box to the left of the prompt, they aren't challenged for secondary authentication when they login to that application from that device for the specified period of time, provided the user does not use a different web browser or clear the cache of that browser.

How Do I Change Settings or Enroll Another Device?

To change settings or enroll another device, access any DUO-supported application and when you get to the DUO prompt, click the Settings button and choose to add a new device or access your  DUO configuration settings.

Note: You will need to have access to the device that is currently enrolled on your account before proceeding to add a second device or adjust setting
