Why do we have a managed print solution?
NCCU implemented a managed print solution to improve the printing experience while ensuring resources are used responsibly. Key reasons include:
- Providing students with access to color printing for academic needs.
- Supporting the University's sustainability and Green Campus initiatives by reducing paper waste.
- Managing the rising costs of printing supplies, including paper, toner, and equipment maintenance.
- Reducing the volume of non-academic printing, such as party flyers, coupons, and other personal materials.
- Offering the convenience of mobile and remote printing so students can print from a variety of devices and locations.
- Ensuring a cost-effective and sustainable printing model that supports equitable access for all NCCU students.
How were services expanded?
- The ability to print from mobile devices or computers to any printer was added.
- Additional printers were added in the Shepard Library and placed in academic buildings across campus. Click here to see the student printing locations.

Students pay technology fees, but why isn’t this included?
The Educational & Technology fee includes a $15 per-student printing allocation, which provides 300 black-and-white pages at a rate of $0.05 per page.
In addition to supporting student printing, the Educational & Technology fees fund a wide range of campus technology services managed by the ITS department. These include, but are not limited to, the campus wireless network infrastructure, classroom technology, the campus telephone system, the university website, the enterprise information system, and the personnel and resources required to maintain and support these services.
How can faculty help students reduce printing?
Faculty members can help reduce unnecessary printing by completing the following:
- Collecting assignments through Canvas, Google Drive, email, or other digital platforms.
- Requesting printed copies only when necessary, such as for final versions of assignments.
- Posting readings and course materials online through Canvas or linking directly to websites instead of requiring printed handouts.
- Refraining from encouraging or requiring students to print textbooks, books, or other lengthy materials unless absolutely necessary.
What can I change to reduce printing?
Students can do their part by printing double-sided and not printing:
- 1 PowerPoint slide per page: instead, print a handout with 3 or more slides per page
- Multiple drafts of the same document; instead, only print the final draft of your paper
- 1 page per sheet; PDFs can be printed in multiple pages per sheet mode
- Textbooks: instead of printing pages needed, read the textbook online
- Party fliers: Have your organization use the campus Print Center; this yields better quality.
How do I know my print balance?
If you are in the library, click on the PaperCut pop-up. Students can also track their printing by visiting the link below and checking their summary.

My print balance is $0, what can I do?
When the maximum number of page allowances is reached, there will be a fee for each group of pages added to your print quota. Printing Dollars can be purchased in $2.50. $5.00 and $10 increments are added to your account when you see the confirmation message indicating a successful purchase. You can add to your print quota by visiting the Eagle Technical Center, located in the James E. Shepard Library, to pay in person.
Note: You will need to use a debit or credit card to add pages to your print quota balance. You cannot charge prints to your student account.
When does my print balance reset?
Print balances will be reset annually at the beginning of the Fall Semester.
Unused pages will carry over from one semester to the next (Fall, Spring, both Summer Sessions). Page credits are only added in the summer if you are enrolled in summer sessions.
I released my print job, but there was a problem with the printer. Can I get a refund?
We offer print credits for a printer jam or other printer malfunction that affects your print job. Students may submit a request in PaperCut, or you must contact ITS immediately to ask for the jam to be cleared, or a credit cannot be issued. Call ETAC at 919-530-7676 during business hours.
If my print job exceeds my remaining pages, how will I know?
You will see a notification pop up on your screen. This indicates that you do not have sufficient pages for the job you are attempting to print.
How can I prevent fraudulent activity with my printing account?
- Always log out of NCCU workstations when you have completed your work
- If you are working on an NCCU workstation, be sure to lock your computer if you step away
- Keep a password on personal devices
- Do not allow colleagues, friends, etc. to use your account
If I have problems or questions, who do I contact?
If you are located in the James E. Shepard Library, please speak with any ITS staff member at the Eagle Technical Center for assistance. If you are at any other campus location, contact the Eagle Technical Assistance Center (ETAC) at 919-530-7676.
