What is Google Classroom?

Google Classroom is an educational technology tool, also known as 'ed-tech', that connects all of the Google G-Suite, such as Google Docs and Google Slides, for educators and students. This tool also helps educators to avoid using paper because it serves as a digital organizer where classroom materials can be stored and shared with students. Educators are also able to pick and choose the features they want to incorporate.

NOTE: Google regularly adds new functions to Google Classroom.

Google Classroom Features

  • add students directly to the platform, or share a code or link so the whole class can join

  • set up a class in minutes and create class work that appears on students’ calendars

  • grade consistently and transparently with rubrics integrated into student work

  • enable originality reports to let students scan their own work for potential plagiarism

  • connect with your students from anywhere with a hybrid approach for in-class and virtual classes

  • communicate important announcements to the Stream page

  • enable face-to-face connections with students using Google Meet which is built into Classroom

  • ensure each user has a unique sign-in to keep individual accounts secure

  • and much more!

Who Can Use Google Classroom?

Google Classroom is free for any organization that uses G Suite for Education or G Suite for Nonprofits. Educators and students can access Google Classroom using a Google account provided by their school too. While educators and students in schools are the primary users of Google Classroom, there are also features that administrators, families, and "home-schoolers" can use.
