How To: Use Speech Recognition for Dictation (Windows)

Setting Up Speech Recognition

Speech recognition allows your voice to control actions and text on your computer. Using only your voice you can start programs, open menus, click buttons and other objects, dictate text into documents, and write and send emails.

1. To get started Open Control Panel > Speech Recognition.
   
    
2. Select Start Speech Recognition.
   
    
3. Begin the Speech Recognition wizard setup steps. Select Next.
    
4. Select your device and click Next; headset microphones are best suited for speech recognition. 
5. Setup your microphone and select Next.
    
6. Read the provided sentences and click Next.
7. You have successfully setup your microphone select Next.​​​​​​​
8. Enable Document Review and select Next.
    
9. ​​​​​​​Select Use Voice Action Mode if you would like to active the software with your voice.  Select Use Manual Action Mode if you would like to physically turn software on and off.  
    
10. ​​​​​​​Print Speech Reference Card, it will provide a list of quick reference commands you can use with your computer, select Next. 
     
11. Select Run Speech Recognition at Start up​​​​​​​.​​​​​​​
12. You have successfully completed the Speech Recognition setup.  Select Start Tutorial.

Train Your Computer to Better Understand You

If your Speech Recognition is not accurately dictating try Train Your Computer to Better Understand You  

1. Select Train Your Computer to Better Understand You

2.  Select Next 
   
3. Read the sentences in a clear normal voice.
   
4. Once you have read all of the sentence you will have successfully completed training your computer. Select Next.   
   
5. If you would like to share your Speech Data with Microsoft to help improve future releases select Send, if not select Don't Send ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
