Student Printing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why do we have a managed print solution?

There were many factors that contributed to installing a managed printing solution:

  • the addition of color printing,
  • green campus efforts to become more efficient and less wasteful,
  • rising costs of resources provided (paper, toner, etc.),
  • an increasing number of non-academic print jobs (party fliers, coupons, etc.),
  • the option of offering mobile & remote print capabilities and
  • to ensure a sustainable model for ALL students.

How were services expanded?

  • The ability to print from mobile devices or computers to any printer.
  • Additional printers were added in the Shepard Library and placed in academic buildings across campus. Click here to see the student printing locations.

How do I print?

  • Mobile Printing: Print from any compatible device

o Apple IOS Devices – iPads, iPhones, iPods
o Android Phones, Tablets, and devices running ChromeOS
o Windows 8 Phones, Surface Tablets, and RT devices

  • Web Printing: Print from your personal computer or laptop using the remote printer driver associated with the desired print location

Students pay technology fees, why isn’t this included?

The $15 is 300 single black and white pages at $.05 per page and is provided by the Educational & Technology fees. The Educational & Technology fees received by the ITS department also contribute toward all technology, to include but not limited to the campus network infrastructure (wireless), the technology in the classrooms, the campus telephone system, the campus website, the campus enterprise system as well as the resources and manpower needed to maintain these items.

This amount is based on the average student printing (942,272 pages printed by 7,368 students, averages 127 pages) during our reporting period (Sept 2014 - March 2015).

How can faculty help students reduce printing?

Faculty members are encouraged to:

  • collect assignments through Blackboard, Google Drive, email, and other digital means,
  • if printing is necessary, only request final copies of assignments,
  • post files reading on websites in Blackboard, and
  • refrain from suggesting the printing of books.

What can I change to reduce printing?

Students can do their part by printing double-sided and not print:

  • 1 PowerPoint slide per page: instead print a handout with 3 or more slides per page
  • Multiple drafts of the same document; instead only print the final draft of your paper
  • 1 page per sheet; PDFs can be printed in multiple pages per sheet mode
  • Textbooks: instead print pages needed or read the textbook online
  • Party fliers: have your organization use the campus Print Center; this yields better quality.

How do I know my print balance?
